What Arden is built from
Unincorporated southern Buncombe County, roughly the ground between Skyland and the Henderson County line at Fletcher, sitting a little above two thousand two hundred feet. Mid-century ranches on large wooded lots, later subdivisions and gated golf communities on the slopes, and a good deal of horse and small-farm property behind the main road.
Retired and semi-retired households in large numbers, plus families drawn by the schools. A lot of downsizing, and a lot of rugs that came south from a colder house and are now in a much damper one.
The Arden problem
Arden is where the mountain grit shows up worst, because the lots are big and the approaches are long. Gravel drives, unpaved shoulders and horse property all put hard, angular mineral soil into the house on shoes and paws, and it does not stay on the surface of a rug — it settles at the base of the pile and cuts the knots from below, which is why the rug thins without ever looking dirty. The wooded lots do the second half: heavy autumn leaf fall, wet leaves walked in for weeks, and tannin that stains brown and sets if it is left. Under all of it, the same cool damp that runs through this whole area, and a house too spread out for any one dehumidifier to reach.
