What Fletcher is built from
Henderson County, on the northern edge of it, next to Asheville Regional Airport and about twelve miles south of Asheville on Hendersonville Road. Older farmhouses and church-village stock at the core, wide post-war and recent subdivisions around it, and river-bottom land running west toward the French Broad and Mills River.
Commuting households in both directions, retirees who wanted level ground and a shorter drive, and families in the newer subdivisions. Rugs are practical more often than they are precious, though the older houses hold some good ones.
The Fletcher problem
This is flat land by local standards, and flat land here means bottom land. The French Broad runs north through this stretch on its way to Asheville, and the low ground either side of it floods — not theoretically, but repeatedly. What that leaves in a rug is a contamination problem rather than a wetting problem, and a rug that was hosed off and stood in the sun afterwards is usually in worse condition than one that was left alone until it could be flushed properly. Away from the river the recurring job is the crawlspace: a vented crawlspace under a house in a river valley runs at the humidity of the valley, and the floor above it never gets a dry spell in a summer too mild to make the air conditioning run.
If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
