Elevation changes the problem. Asheville sits at about two thousand one hundred feet, summers rarely get hot enough to make the air conditioning work, and half the houses here are cut into a slope with a lower floor holding back the mountain. A stone-floored room in Biltmore Forest, a hundred-year-old frame house on Montford Avenue and a walk-out basement in Haw Creek are all dealing with the same cool damp air in different ways. These are the areas we collect from most, and what tends to be waiting when we get there.
