What Montford is built from
A National Register district since November 1977, with most of its roughly six hundred buildings put up between 1890 and 1920 — Queen Anne, Shingle Style, Colonial Revival and bungalows, several of them from Richard Sharp Smith's office. Original wood floors, tall rooms, and unheated cellars and attics that came with the house.
Owners who bought into the district on purpose and restore rather than rip out, plus a considerable number of houses working as inns and short-term rentals. Rugs here tend to be old, good, and chosen to suit a period room.
The Montford problem
A hundred-and-twenty-year-old house is not sealed and was never meant to be. Air moves through it, which is fine in principle, except that the air outside is cool and wet for most of the year and the rubble-and-stone cellars under these houses are wetter still. Moisture rises into the ground-floor structure and sits in anything absorbent lying on it, and a wool rug is the most absorbent thing in the room. The other Montford problem is the attic and the closed guest room: dark, still, unheated, undisturbed for months, and full of stored wool. That is the exact specification a clothes moth is looking for, and they graze the underside first, so the top of the rug reads as perfectly sound while the knots behind it are going.
